Continuing our search for misunderstood and twisted Scriptures that appear to do away with the Law, we now come to EPHESIANS 2:14-16. Paul means by ‘two’ or ‘twain’ in verse 15 the Jews and Gentiles become one in Yahshua Messiah, that is, all become Christians or believers. It is when he writes about the Law that this passage becomes confusing, remembering that in ROMANS 8:6-7 he writes:
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against (bitterly opposed to) YHWH; for it is not subject to the Law of YHWH, neither indeed can be.
Look at the King James Version first:
EPHESIANS 2:14-16 For He is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; having abolished in His flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in Himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that He might reconcile both unto YHWH in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
One Scripture says the carnal mind–sin–is enmity to the Law, the other says the Law is enmity. How interesting is that? EPHESIANS 2:15-16 is saying here that the dividing wall separating Jew and Gentile before they become believers in Messiah is the Law. How can that be? It is doubtful Gentile pagans even knew of YHWH’s Law well enough for it to be a cause of division or conflict between them. There is no doubt, however, that Yahshua’s death on the cross slew the enmity. In order to understand this Scripture, we need to sort out what ‘enmity’ is and of what the ‘middle wall of partition’ between Jew and Gentile is composed.
Translated from Greek the passage literally reads:
For is the peace of us, the (One) making both one, and the middle wall of partition having broken, the enmity in the flesh of Him, the Law of commandments in decrees, having abolished, that the two He create in Himself into one new man, making peace, and might reconcile both in one body to YHWH through the cross slaying the enmity in Himself.
One thing here is certain to the serious student–the word ‘even’ before ‘the law of commandments’ is not in the original Greek. In the King James Version of the Bible, all words in italics were not in the original manuscripts but inserted supposedly to give clarity and understanding. The word ‘even’ here is one such. Another is the word ‘contained’. (Please be aware I have written the whole passage in italics, but with the inserted words upright). Also certain is whatever the enmity is, it has been abolished. But, is it the Law that has been abolished? Is it some sort of sin as stated in ROMANS 8:6-7? Or is it something else?
The Book of Yahweh renders this passage thus:
For He is our peace, Who has made both one, and has broken down the dividing wall separating us—Abolishing the enmity, the hatred and the opposition, to the Law, the Commandments, and the Ordinances, through His own flesh, in order to create in Himself one new man from the two, making peace.
This rendering, if accurate shows clearly and more sensibly that the enmity is the Gentiles hatred and opposition to YHWH’s Law. In other words, their rebellion toward YHWH Himself. The dividing wall between Jew and Gentile is the uncleanness of the Gentiles because of that lawlessness, that keeps them from being like the Jews who obey the Law.
The words ‘even’ and ‘contained’ have been added afterwards to the Scriptures by the lying scribes…
‘How can you say, “We are wise, and the law of (YHWH) is with us”? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes Has made it into a lie.’ (YER. 8:8)
…who would have the reader believe the enmity is the Law itself. This is despite it being in opposition to many other Scriptures. So the enmity is the sin in the former lives of the Gentile Ephesian converts.
EPHESIANS 2:1-2 And you hath He quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins; wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.
This sin cut them off from YHWH:
Behold YHWH’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, neither is His ear heavy, that it cannot hear: but your iniquities have separated between you and your Father and your sins have hid His face from you, that He will not hear (IS. 59:1-2).
We know from I JOHN 3:4 that sin is transgression of the law. Rebellious, carnal men from all the nations of the earth are in continuous sin and therefore separated from YHWH. Only the children of Israel were given YHWH’s Laws which showed the way to salvation. The traditions of the Jews made it unlawful for Jewish people to come into contact with Gentiles, as Peter stated in ACTS 10:28:
And he said unto them, Ye know that it an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or to come unto one of another nation…
So this is the dividing wall that has been broken down. Peter continues:
…but YHWH hath shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
Now the Gentile converts are no longer strangers or unclean. They accepted YHWH’s Laws and were justified through Yahshua’s sacrifice.
Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of YHWH (EPH. 2:19).
Any confusion or misunderstanding of EPHESIANS 2:15 would have been avoided if the word ‘enmity’ had been translated correctly as ‘enmity to’ or ‘enmity toward’.
